Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her summers in Selma and decided to make a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was still in college. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to look-out and search for the house of an individual juror. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotions, like the Urban Beauty Collective.
